Little Readers in Kindergarten
thanks to www.zimbio.com for the clipart
- We are starting our Little Readers in kindergarten in the near future
- Each child may be at different reading levels
- We use books with predictable language. For example our 25 sight words
- We will cover the book during class time
- The book will also be sent home once a week
- We need the books back the next day
- Together, the two of you hold the book
- Point to each word, or slide your finger under the text as you read it
- Spend lots of time talking about the book. Discuss a letter, word, and sentence
- Sometimes your child may invent the story at times by looking at the pictures in the story
- It is common for your child to memorize the book
- When appropriate, let the child figure out the word. Start with the sound of the first letter of the word.
- Stop when your child indicates that he or she has had enough
- Don’t let your child struggle through a tough word, he or she may feel frustrated, and we are trying to build his or her reading confidence
- Read and reread your child’s favorites
- Relax and enjoy the time together.
- Have fun and happy reading!!!
